Your Memories of Myer
Herald in the Afternoon
The Herald was a widely distributed afternoon newspaper (similar to MX). The front page had "What is on at Myer Melbourne" and listed the activities that were being held in the store the following day.
First Christmas Windows
The first Christmas windows appeared in 1956 to coincide with the Olympic Games.
Carnival Atmosphere
Carnival atmosphere existed outside the Toy Department on Level 6, Lonsdale Street, during school holidays and on special occasions. Unfortunately it was shut down in 1989 due to OH&S, it was considered that the roof top was not safe for such gatherings.
Basement Buyers
The Basement did its own buying and was a great training ground for our buyers. It was in the early days a separate store.
Spruiking
Guest spruikers and full time Myer spruikers presented new products and great specials daily. In particular, the Basement at lunch time was a buzz.
Haberdashery
The wonderful haberdashery department was on the first floor, customers came from near and far. It later moved to Level 5.
Asparagus rolls
Asparagus rolls and Devonshire teas in the Mural Hall. Ladies dressed up for afternoon tea.
Fashion
Glamorous Fashion parades In the Mural Hall and grand balls. The stairs cases were used for these balls, where the ladies displayed the beautiful gowns.
